An Ivy Reflection …There is no doubt that going to Harvard, then on to Columbia and Dartmouth had a profound influence on who I’ve become and who I continue to become. The Ivy League has represented the best of the best and it has been gratifying to be surrounded by the world’s elite minds and the challenges that exist in the expansive marketplace of ideas. My family deserves all the credit for preparing me (and my twin brother who went to Harvard also) to take full advantage of the opportunities that have opened before me.

Dr. Ian Smith is the former medical correspondent for NBC News network and for NewsChannel 4 where he filed reports for NBC's "Nightly News" and the "Today" show as well as WNBC's various news broadcasts. He has written for various publications including Time magazine and Newsweek, and is currently a health columnist for the New York Daily News and Men's Health magazine. Dr. Smith currently serves as a medical contributor to the nationally syndicated television show, The View and the Tavis Smiley Show on NPR. Dr. Smith has been featured in several other publications including People, Ebony, Cosmopolitan, JET, and University of Chicago Medicine on the Midway.

Dr. Smith's work has been honored by several organizations, including the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for his coverage on the momentous events beginning on Sept. 11, 2001. Dr. Smith is very active in charitable causes, serving on several boards including the New York City Mission Society, Cancer Research Foundation of America, American Council on Exercise, North Shore-Long Island Jewish Research Institute, Henry H. Kessler Foundation, and Building with Books.

Dr. Smith graduated from Harvard College with an AB and received a master’s in science education from Columbia University. He attended Dartmouth Medical School and completed the last two years of his medical education and graduated from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

Dr. Smith is also the author of two books, the critically acclaimed Dr. Ian Smith's Guide to Medical Websites and The Take-Control Diet. He is currently on hiatus from television, and busy at work on his first novel, a thriller titled THE BLACKBIRD PAPERS, that will be published in June 2004 by Doubleday Books.
