The tour includes three restaurants in the neighborhood representing "the old," "the new," and "the marriage of the two!" providing a round representation of the diversity of Harlem's restaurant scene as it correlates to the diversity of the community.
These places could not thrive or exist if there was not a market for them here and the investment made in creating these mini-cultural centers for people to safely commune in neighborhoods that were once deemed "war zones" has significantly influenced the New Harlem Renaissance. Mainstream publications such at The New York Times and Wall Street Journal have only skimmed the surface of the impact that these individuals have made on the re-birth of their community and the opportunities they have created for many other small business owners to come. This series will explore the vision that each person had for their business and their process toward manifesting it.
The walking tour will conclude at Ristorante Settepani for a chat and chew session of light fare. | | | | Hosted by: | | Monique Alves (Columbia, '09) and Sonya Spann (The College of New Jersey, '11)
